September 18th Weeding Event

On 18th September 2024, seven Tyne Rivers Trust volunteers kindly helped
weed the hedgerow along the arboretum next to the River Tyne. Five of the seven volunteers had planted the original hedgerow saplings two years ago. Generally, the hedgerow trees have grown well and there is clear evidence that some species grow quicker than others.
After the Project Manager shared a range of lunchtime goodies they felt energised enough to also help weed the specimen trees at Overdene (point 17 on our arboretum map). The weeding in both areas revealed a small proportion of our trees have not survived. An inventory was taken of what needs to be replaced and an order will be put in for replacement specimen trees.

For hedgerow trees our project manager has been growing on saplings in her allotment. These will be transplanted at another volunteering day early December 2024. We have to wait for the trees to be dormant (lose their leaves) before transplanting.
